Orroroo Community Waste Management Scheme Stage 1

Duration: October 2018 – March 2019

Client: District Council of Orroroo Carrieton

Location: Orroroo, South Australia

Project Value: $2 million

Project Description:

This project was the first stage of the wastewater system laid out at Orroroo to connect the commercial buildings of the township and construct the WWTP and reticulation system back to the football oval. Key components of the project where as follows;

  • 1,200m; PVC Gravity Sewer Mains, dia. 150mm

  • Associated Precast Concrete Manholes & PVC Maintenance shafts

  • 3,000m; PVC Sewer Rising Mains and Irrigation Mains, dia. 90mm

  • 1x Pre-Cast Sewer Pump Station

  • WWTP lagoons construction, 6000m3 cut to fill

Challenges:

The installation of the gravity main and rising mains was located along the DPTI managed road RM Williams Way, the main arterial route through the Mid North district. As a result, various construction methodologies were implemented to mitigate impacts to traffic thoroughfare and ensure a safe work environment. They included;

  • Utilisation of directional drilling for the installation of rising mains under road crossings

  • Boring gravity main with a company owned custom bed boring machine capable of drilling on grade for distances of up to 40m

  • Liaising with DPTI to ensure methods are compliant with detailed traffic control plans

The construction of the lagoons at the WWTP was completed using GPS, set up on our D5 bulldozer. This allowed a high quality and seamless surface level to match the design detail, while also minimizing time spent on the earthworks and providing saving’s for the client.

Final Outcome:

The project was completed on time and within budget, with additional scope added to facilitate the transition to convert the commercial buildings across to the scheme. A temporary irrigation system was also incorporated to handle outflows until the treatment plant operates at full capacity.
