Beachport Community Waste Management Scheme
Duration: February 2012 – October 2013
Client: Wattle Range Council
Location: Beachport, South Australia
Project Value: $8 million
Project Description:
The Beachport - Community Waste Management Scheme (CWMS) was constructed by Baker Civil Australia Ptd Ltd, under its former name Baker & Gibbons Pty Ltd and included the supply and install of all components of a CWMS. Components constructed for the Beachport CWMS included:
11,000m; PVC Gravity Sewer Mains, dia. 150 – 300mm
Associated Precast Concrete Manholes & PVC Maintenance shafts
7,000m; PVC Sewer Rising Mains, dia. 50 - 200mm
8x Pre-Cast Sewer Pump Station (SPS) Packages
Challenges:
Involved in the construction of the Beachport CWMS were a range of challenges that needed to be overcome in order to construct the varies components. Some were more significant than others but all needed to be overcome in order to complete the project. They included:
Extensive ground water inundation during trenching for the varies pipelines & SPS shaft excavation
Deep trench excavation up to 5m
Hard rock encountered in different areas of the town
The ground water was the most significant challenge to overcome because it was encountered in over 60% of the gravity drain catchment area and at varying depths within the trench profile. A range of dewatering techniques from sump pumping with flex-drive pumps right up too multi stage dewatering systems requiring the use of 2x 150mm Sykes Vacuum Pumps were used across the project. Deep trench excavation for the gravity drain alignment down the main street of Beachport was avoided by Baker Civil proposing alternative options via different alignments to reduce the depth of excavation. Hard rock was excavated with our capability to handle rock.
Final Outcome:
The project was completed on time and within budget.
